Il est facile à utilisé. :-) John B. Barrett (no homepage) wrote on 02.07.2003: I am interested to see your work on the tansy ragwort Senecio jacobea. In the 1970s I used to see ragwort, thistle, and dockweed we did our best to control on a dairy farm of my second cousins the Buckleys in Moskeigh, Templemartin, Bandon, county Cork, Ireland. Now in the Olympic peninsula of Washington state USA I see weedy ragworts along city streets and rural highways. In the Hitchcock and Cronquist flora of the U.S. Northwest, I see that Senecio species are numerous, - many native here, but the introduced Senecio jacobea poisonous and especially prevalent in hayfields and disturbed areas. I understand that livestock get irreversible liver damage before symptons appear. I wondered what the toxic dose is, and whether there is any danger to children that eat small amounts. Are other species toxic? I wonder if you have information on the evolutionary history of the genus and species - when did species jacobea originate, and what are its near relatives? I understand that in the Andean paramos and in mountain airss in Agrica tree-like woody Senecios are ecologically important, and that woody Compositae or Asteraceae are probably ancestral to herbaceous annuals. Any comments or references will be appreciated. John B. Barrett 300 Evergreen Loop, Forks Washington WA 98331 USA Answer: Sorry,
John, but I don't have any phyto-ecological information on Senecio jacobea
(photo).
But if anyone out there knows anything about this species, please drop
John a line.
